Many schools are moving beyond long-standing anonymous access to computers, instead implementing individual student and teacher accounts with network logins and passwords, similar to business environments. The idea of users being able to access their documents and settings from any computer allows schools to treat each student and teacher as an individual. This allows for enhanced collaboration and exciting new opportunities for interaction among students and teachers while at the same time centralizing data and improving accountability and security.
Having network accounts stored in a centralized directory and accessible from any computer is only the first part of the equation. Because schools districts seldom are 100% Mac or PC, even schools that have implemented network accounts/home folders have sometimes chosen to make it an either/or proposition, to maintain two separate directories because of the different platforms, or to settle on the lowest common denominator to allow some degree of compatibility.
Through a proven solution, Connecting Point is able to utilize the strengths of both Active Directory in Windows Server and Open Directory in OS X Server to provide users with one account and the same Documents and Desktop regardless of whether they use a Mac or a PC. Mac clients also received their centrally Managed Preferences from OS X Server without impacting them when they utilize a PC and PC clients receive their Policies from the Windows Server without impacting them when they use a Mac. Our solution allows for centralized management of user accounts, storage, and privileges.
